As the fall 2024 semester approaches, there are a few changes to learning tools provided by the university.
Flip moved to Teams for Education
Microsoft announced that Flip, a video discussion platform, is no longer a separate application but is now part of Microsoft Teams for Education. This change means that Flip can no longer be embedded or linked into a CarmenCanvas page.
Flip Solutions:
- 1. Video posts in Carmen Discussion Boards (recommended). Students can post video responses in discussion boards, they can like posts and comment on the posts of their classmates. Check out this resource on recording a video in a Canvas Discussion board.
- 2. Flip within Teams for Education. Please note that Flip within Teams is now only the Flip Camera feature, it does not include the previous Flip discussion, response features or peer interactivity. Here is a quick resource on creating a Flip video recording assignment in Microsoft Teams.
Proctorio Retired
In April 2024 the university retired the proctoring tool, Proctorio.
The university reviewed alternatives and selected a new proctoring tool called Honorlock. Learn more through this Getting Started with Honorlock guide.
New Quizzes and Discussions
Discussions: You may notice that the discussion tool in Canvas has a new look! This redesign includes new sorting and viewing features, including a new split-screen viewer. Also, users can now “at mention” others to notify them of the conversation. Read the Canvas Discussions Redesign overview to learn more.
New Quizzes: This tool is already available for you to explore within your course. The university transition timeline walks through the implementation process and how you can enable New Quizzes in your course. Please note that the university is in the process of phasing out Classic Quizzes, so we encourage you to explore New Quizzes today!
Other Important Learning Tool Updates
In addition to those listed above, learn more about updates in CarmenCanvas, CarmenZoom, Mediasite, TopHat, and more through the university announcement regarding Important Teaching and Learning Tool Updates for Autumn 2024.
